A Mommy Challenge Revisited…

I can’t believe that no one replied/commented to the Mommy Challenge blog post, so I am reissuing it!! What? Are you having trouble answering it, too?? Please, help me out here and let me know I’m not alone on this island…

In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, read the last blot “A Mommy Challenge”.. the bottom line of the challenge is:  I want to hear what you think is the best thing about being a mom!! It can be a blurb, a word, a sentence, a blog or a book! I just want to hear what you think!  Can’t wait to hear what you have to say!

Hi Kim! I love your blog….
I think the best thing about being a mom is the sense of loving purpose that accompanies motherhood. The transformation from a woman to a mother feels like as big a change as a catipillar to butterfly!
That probably sounds silly….and my baby is almost 12 now, and needs me less with each passing day. I still remember that tiny baby looking at me, and realizing that I was responsible for her well being…overwhelming! Wonderfully overwhelming I mean.

Well said, Stacey! Motherhood certainly gives purpose to one’s life. I really like that you wrote “loving purpose” and the comparison you made to becoming a butterfly.

Now, here is my response: Most of the best things about being a mom are selfish–the unconditional love from your child, having someone you can dress in anything you want, knowing that he/she is a part of you, and so on. I like who I am because of Henry, and I like who I am when I am with Henry (but that’s selfish too). I asked James what the best part of fatherhood is, and he said, “The best part of being a dad is the smile I get each morning when Henry sees me.” I get that too (and it is nice), but that isn’t it for me. I honestly can’t put in to words what the best part of being a mom is, so I’ll just say, look at him–what’s not great about being a mom?

I’m going to keep thinking about it, and if I do happen to find a way to put my answer in to words, I’ll post it. In the mean time, I hope lots of other people respond so I can build on their responses.
